4.5/5 Stars! Uncle Penyet (One Punggol Hawker): A Must-Visit for Indonesian Flavors! Uncle Penyet at One Punggol Hawker is a standout stall that exceeded my expectations! Sou Sou and I decided to try both their grilled fish (Ikan Bakar) and crispy chicken (Ayam Penyet), and I was not disappointed. The Ikan Bakar was perfectly grilled, offering a delightful smoky flavor that was enhanced by the vibrant sambal. The fish was tender and moist, a testament to the chef's skill. The Ayam Penyet was equally impressive, boasting a satisfying crunch with every bite, thanks to the generous coating of crispy crumbs. The chicken was well-seasoned. The rice was fluffy, and the fresh vegetables provided a refreshing balance to the rich flavors of the main dishes. For anyone looking to experience authentic Indonesian cuisine in Punggol, Uncle Penyet is a must-visit. The chilli is definitely the highlight! Ratings: • Food: 5/5 Stars (Perfectly grilled fish, crispy chicken, and amazing sambal!) • Service: 4/5 Stars (Quick and efficient) • Atmosphere: 3/5 Stars (Typical hawker center setting)
Stall was closing at 8pm so not many choices Ayam bakar was overly sweet for my liking. Curry poured over the rice was thick but lack in flavor
So, I decided to try the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Set from this stall, and here’s my take. The dish came with a big, juicy chicken leg, fragrant rice, and a side of sambal and fresh veggies. Presentation-wise, it looked inviting, with the golden hue of the lemongrass marinade shining through. The chicken was tender and well-cooked, with the lemongrass flavour standing out nicely—it had that earthy, citrusy kick that’s typical of a good lemongrass dish. However, the ‘spicy’ part of the name might feel a bit underwhelming unless you mix in the sambal, which had a nice heat to it but wasn’t overpowering. The rice was fluffy and had a subtle seasoning, though I think it could’ve been a touch more flavourful to stand out against the strong lemongrass marinade. The fresh cucumber and lettuce were a nice touch, adding some crunch and freshness to the meal. Overall, it’s a satisfying meal for its price of $6.20 especially if you enjoy the distinct flavour of lemongrass. Just be prepared to rely on the sambal if you’re after a spicier kick!
