Tucked inside the Raffles Specialist Clinics at Bras Basah, Serangoon BBQ & Curry is a hidden gem that beautifully blends nostalgia and innovation in local cuisine. The brand traces its roots back to the Serangoon area, where it first built a loyal following for its hearty, hawker-style fare featuring traditional Southeast Asian flavours reimagined with a modern sensibility. On my visit, I ordered the chicken with green sambal, and it was nothing short of outstanding. The sambal sauce was spicy, piquant, and deeply aromatic, adding just the right kick to the perfectly fried, tender, and juicy chicken thigh. The accompanying lemak curry vegetables were equally delightful — the cabbage yielded effortlessly to each bite, and the gravy struck a perfect balance between richness and lightness. The dish was rounded out with a serving of achar that deserves its own mention: crunchy, tangy, and delicately perfumed with ginger flower, it added brightness and texture to the meal. To finish, I had the Nanyang coffee coconut pandan latte — a truly special creation. What made it stand out was the espresso-based Nanyang coffee, which delivered a smooth, bold, and aromatic finish. It was the perfect ending to a superb meal. Ordering is done through a largely automated booth, which may take a little getting used to, but it’s well worth the patience. The friendly staff are always nearby to guide you through the process if needed. All in all, Serangoon BBQ & Curry is a little culinary gem in the heart of the city, offering comforting local flavours executed with finesse. A place I’ll definitely be returning to — again and again.
For anyone craving a savoury celebration, their nasi padang cake is THE bomb! Just mix everything together (yes, including the chilli) and eat it like a bibimbap. So satisfying!! Our whole family enjoyed it a lot. The cake is also packed with very generous layers of ingredients, which makes every bite super shiok. In there, you will find blue pea rice, BBQ chicken, otak, chai poh egg, sambal petai, cinchaklok eggplant and sambal quail eggs.
