If I were rating this place purely on the food and atmosphere, it would easily be a 5-star review. The food is awesome, packed with flavor, and the ambience of the restaurant is genuinely nice and inviting. Sadly, a dining experience is about more than just the food, and the service here really dragged the overall score down for me. Even though this is explicitly a self-service concept where customers handle most things themselves, that shouldn't be an excuse for a complete lack of basic manners or hospitality. The staff member at the counter was not pleasant at all. A simple smile or a polite tone goes a long way, but instead, I was met with a sour attitude that made the interaction highly disappointing. The issue was highlighted when I simply asked for a straw for my drink. I was informed they don't provide them, which left me stuck. If a restaurant decides to eliminate straws, they need to think about the logistics of how a customer is supposed to stir their drink. Without a straw, you need at least a stirring spoon to mix everything together, but nothing was offered or made available. It’s frustrating when a great meal is ruined by poor front-facing customer service and a lack of attention to small details like a drink stirrer. The food is definitely worth trying, but you have to be prepared to deal with a completely indifferent and unpleasant attitude from the staff. I hope management addresses these minor service gaps and works on staff attitude, as it would make a massive difference to an otherwise great spot.
If you’re around the Mustafa area and craving a solid local bite, Sam Leong St Chicken Rice is definitely worth checking out! Tried it for the first time recently (they seem newly opened and 24 hours too — big plus!), and honestly, it didn’t disappoint. The rice was super fragrant and flavourful — the kind that already tastes good on its own. Portions are generous, got extra rice 😍 The sambal/sauce hits a nice balance — not overly spicy, just enough kick to complement the chicken without overpowering it. Overall, a really satisfying plate for the price and portion. If you’re in the area and looking for a comforting local delicacy, this is a great spot to try. I’m already planning my next visit to check out their otak-otak and drinks! Simple, tasty, and value for money 👍
We came by really by chance. A plan for morning prata but became chicken rice instead..hahhaa.. Lets dive in! Food: Typical Normal and Hainan chicken rice but with a slight twist on the self-serve. The soup and sauces were on self service. They also had the tofu and egg. Taste was just slightly better than many due to the warm soup and rice. That made it distinct and nice, as it was not cold like many others. Service: Staff was very welcoming. Even though staff wad the cashier, the table cleaner, the person preparing the food, he was still all smiles. Kudos to him for holding the fort well that morning. Atmosphere: The restaurant was bright and lively. Being at the corner of a road, the place is rather prominent. We loved the simple layout and deco. The most important of this is that the restaurant is Halal. Fyi, we read that this restaurant is not actually Chef Sam Leong's but a coincidence due to the road name. All in all, we would highly recommend to try. If you near mustafa centre, then go over for a meal. Cheers!
