Project Penyek by Ansar – A Slam Dunk for Indonesian Soul Food at Senja Hawker Centre If you are a fan of bold Indonesian flavours, Project Penyek by Ansar at Senja Hawker Centre deserves a spot on your food trail. Located at the heart of Bukit Panjang’s newest culinary hotspot, this halal-certified stall has been drawing steady queues since opening, and after tasting their signature dish, it is easy to see why . Location: #02-17, 2 Senja Close, Singapore 677632 (Senja Hawker Centre) Hours: 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM (Closed on Sundays) The Food: Crispy, Juicy, and Packing Heat The undisputed star here is the Nasi Ayam Penyet. True to its name ("penyet" means "smashed" in Indonesian), the dish arrives with a beautifully fried chicken drumstick that has been gently crushed to allow the flavours to meld with the sides. The frying is executed perfectly—the chicken skin is incredibly crispy and shatters with every bite, while the meat underneath remains remarkably tender and juicy . However, the soul of this dish is undoubtedly the sambal. This is not a meek, sugary sambal meant for the faint-hearted. It is potent, deep, and carries a serious kick that builds with every mouthful. It cuts through the richness of the fried chicken beautifully and pairs perfectly with the fragrant white rice. While the Nasi Ayam Penyet is the crowd favourite, the stall also offers variety for return visits, including beef and fish versions for those looking for an alternative to chicken . The Heritage What adds to the appeal is the stall's backstory. Project Penyek isn't a fly-by-night operation; it originated from the legendary ABC Brickworks food centre, where it built a reputation for maintaining high standards. It is great to see them bring that same quality to the heart of Bukit Panjang . Verdict Project Penyek by Ansar is a fantastic representation of modern hawker culture in Singapore—a heritage recipe executed with consistency and a loyal following. Whether you are a resident of the area or making a trip specifically to try Senja Hawker Centre, this stall at #02-17 is a must-try. Just be prepared to queue, and maybe have a cold drink ready for that powerful sambal. Rating: 4.5/5 Recommendation: Go for the Nasi Ayam Penyet. Ask for extra sambal if you dare.

On 15 January 2026, I had the pleasure of visiting the stall during its anniversary celebration, and I was truly impressed by both the outstanding service and the quality of the food. The staff were warm, attentive, and went out of their way to make every customer feel welcome. The highlight of the day was the generous gesture of giving out 400 packets of free Ayam Penyet to mark the special occasion. The Ayam Penyet was nothing short of excellent—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with authentic flavours that left a lasting impression. This thoughtful act not only showcased their commitment to the community but also their dedication to providing top-notch food and service. I highly recommend this stall for anyone seeking a memorable meal and genuine hospitality. The Ayam Penyet here is truly a must-try!

I am extremely disappointed with the experience my friend had with this ayam penyet stall and feel compelled to share it so other customers can be aware. My friend went down intending to order 5 sets of ayam penyet and specifically requested for all thighs only. He was informed that the stall was unable to fulfil the request. That was completely fine we understand that stalls have their own policies and limitations, and we respected their decision. However, the issue started after payment was made. Earlier, he had already scanned the stall’s PayNow QR code in preparation to pay. After being told they couldn’t fulfil the order, he walked to another stall to purchase food instead. Unfortunately, he forgot that the PayNow recipient details were still from the ayam penyet stall when he proceeded to transfer the payment. As a result, $64.30 was accidentally transferred to the wrong stall. The moment he realised the mistake, he immediately approached the stall to explain the situation politely and clearly. He showed proof of the transfer and requested a refund since no food was prepared, no order was taken, and no service was rendered. Instead of resolving the issue amicably, the staff provided the boss’s contact number for further discussion. However, after a brief exchange of text messages explaining the situation and requesting a refund, the boss proceeded to block my friend, cutting off all further communication. This was extremely shocking and disappointing. We fully acknowledge that the mistaken transfer was an honest human error. But when someone transfers money to you by accident especially when no goods or services were provided basic fairness and integrity should apply. Refusing to return money that clearly does not belong to you, and then blocking the person when they try to resolve the matter, reflects very poorly on business ethics. $64.30 is a small amount. But keeping the money under such circumstances feels unjust and unreasonable. Mistakes happen. What defines a business is how they respond to those mistakes. A responsible stall owner would have: * Verified the transaction * Acknowledged that no order was fulfilled * Returned the money promptly * Resolved the matter professionally Instead, this situation escalated unnecessarily due to a complete lack of cooperation and accountability. We are extremely disappointed not just because of the money, but because of the principle involved. Customer trust is important in any business, whether big or small. Situations like this damage that trust significantly. We hope the stall owner reconsiders and resolves this matter properly. Until then, customers should be very careful when making PayNow transfers and double-check recipient details before confirming payment. Very unfortunate and disappointing experience.
