This is a nice place for a small group looking for a relaxing al fresco vibe. The seating area in the open atrium of the National Library Building makes for a nice setting. Comfortable and cool in the usual heat of the Singapore afternoon. Food is simple local fare. Old Chang Kee is famous for curry puffs and my favourite is the sardine puff. They also have nice lunch and dinner dishes. I enjoyed the curry, the dry laksa and the blue pea nasi lemak dishes. They're not "blow your socks off awesome" but they are pretty yummy and definitely make a gathering with friends more pleasant.
Visited Old Chang Kee at the National Library and tried the waffle + kopi set, along with their new steamed bun. The kopi was just average, nothing particularly memorable. The waffle, however, was quite good and enjoyable. I was told the wait time would be around 30 minutes, but I ended up waiting even longer. After checking with the staff, I found out my order had actually been missed, which was quite disappointing. I also tried the new steamed curry o bun, but it was very wet inside and tasted quite different from the usual curry o. I personally still prefer the classic version. Another downside was the seating area outside, which didn’t seem to be cleaned regularly. Overall, mixed experience—some good food items, but service and cleanliness definitely need improvement.
Surprised to find cooked food instead of fingers food. Great value after looking at the pricing and portion. Laksa is worth it for the taste, portion and value. Nasi is not as hot as I like it to be, the chili sauce is good, better if it's hotter! Environment is good.
