National day is upon us and the various fast food brands are shelling out all the locally inspired iterations of familiar favourites. While last year might have been about Chilli Crab, this year McD and KFC led the charge with Curry Chicken burgers and in the case of KFC they threw in a prata type bun for good measure. Interestingly, that was actually a pretty good fusion which I enjoyed immensely. So you can imagine my joy when I chanced upon what LJS was cooking for the 9th of August this year. If you remember they had a mantou burger with their chilli crab sauced chicken in 2025. This year they kept the chilli crab sauce but swopped the mantou out for a prata taco bun instead. Truth be told, its nowhere near as good as the KFC prata bun, dry with barely any bite nor crisp, it was more like a toasted wrap than oily roti canai. The chicken that was supposedly doused in sauce was about the size of one chicken tender, soggy from the sauce and the worst bit, the sauce barely covered the meat and I could barely taste anything, no thanks to the massive dollop of what I think is egg mayo slapped on top. Pretty sad looking and barely filling. Thank goodness the breaded onion rings were fantastic, coated in that same LJS batter it went perfectly with the chilli sauce and is the only reason I gave 2 stars. Besides that, service was abysmal, our food was ready but the counter staff made no effort to even call us, the screen that showed order numbers that were ready was not showing our number, we waited a good 10 mins before we approached the counter to check on our food only to find out that the tray of our food was there for the past 10 minutes. Also the store had mosquitoes at the dining area at the back and also strangely boxes of food containers were placed on the tables and chairs preventing anyone from seating and this was peak lunch hour mind you. I waited for a table nearer to the entrance for a slighly more conducive place to eat my meal only to realise the table was barely wiped and had all manner of grease or sauce stains haphazardly wiped. Ugh...probably will never be back again thats for sure.
Long John Silver's is located at level 1 of Tiong Bahru Plaza, near to Central Plaza alongside other fast food restaurants such as Burger King and Shiok Burger. I ordered the 2 pc Chicken / Spicy Chicken set, with garden side salad as the sides. The vegetables are fresh and are a great healthy option to have. The chicken pales in comparison to KFC / McDonald's, but is much more affordable. The clam chowder is really great and flavorful, I would definite recommend other's to try.
Improved menu and touchscreen ordering. Alaska pollock was nice and soft. Spicy chicken was mild spicy. Crumbs were same delicious standard. Clam chowder was diluted and watery, disappointing compared to other fastfood brand. Black coffee was strong and aromatic. Self-collect food by queue numbers flashed on display screen. Tables were dirty. No staff available to clean. We had to get some servettes and clean the tables and seats ourselves. Had a basin for washing hands.
