Zi Xuan LeeChewy Junior has been around since 2007 and it instantly brings back memories of grabbing a box of cream puffs before leaving Bugis Junction! Fast forward to today, I am glad to say that their signature cream puffs are still as good as ever. With their crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside pastry and smooth, thick cream fillings, it’s easy to see why they continue to have such a loyal following. This season, Chewy Junior has introduced two limited time flavours that pistachio lovers will definitely want to check out: Raspberry Pistachio and Pistachio Nama Chocolate. The Raspberry Pistachio was one of my favourites from the box of six that I tried. Topped with pistachio spread and raspberry jam, it delivered a lovely contrast between the deep, earthy nuttiness of the pistachio and the bright fruity sweetness of the raspberry. The signature vanilla cream inside helped tie everything together beautifully without making it feel too heavy. The Pistachio Nama Chocolate was equally enjoyable. Made with pistachio frosty, chocolate ganache, nama chocolate and vanilla cream, this flavour felt a little more indulgent. The nama chocolate melted beautifully in the mouth, while the pistachio added a rich roasted nut flavour. The combination of chocolate and pistachio is always a winner, and Chewy Junior executed it well. What impressed me about both new flavours was the use of pistachio paste made from 100% real pistachio nuts. You can genuinely taste the deep earthy flavour rather than just an artificial pistachio sweetness. Besides the new launches, I also revisited some of their popular flavours. The Tiramisu Deluxe, one of their bestsellers, featured espresso frosty and cocoa powder over their signature vanilla cream. Coffee lovers will appreciate the aromatic espresso notes that complemented the creamy filling. Another bestseller, the Chocolate Cookie, was packed with semi dark chocolate ganache and cookie crumbs. Rich, chocolatey and satisfying, this is an easy crowd pleaser that people of all ages will love. The Matcha Chocolate Fudge combined earthy matcha frosty with semi dark chocolate ganache and crunchy peanut crumbs. I enjoyed how the slight bitterness of the matcha balanced the sweetness of the chocolate. For something a little nostalgic, the Peanut Butter & Jelly delivered exactly what its name promised. The peanut butter flavour was incredibly rich and intense, while the fruity jam added sweetness and tanginess. I also got to try their Gift Set, which comes with 9 mini assorted cream puffs featuring their signature flavours. The petite size makes them perfect for office pantries, tea breaks, parties and gatherings where everyone can sample a few different flavours without committing to a full sized puff. If you’re hosting a larger gathering, there’s also a Party Set with 16 mini assorted cream puffs. What keeps me coming back to Chewy Junior is the texture of the puffs themselves. That signature chewy pastry paired with fragrant vanilla cream that isn’t overly sweet remains incredibly satisfying. With over 30 flavours available, there’s truly something for everyone. The limited edition Raspberry Pistachio and Pistachio Nama Chocolate are available now for a limited time only, so don’t wait too long if you want to try them. Silvia VolpettiI tried this pastry shop specializing in cream puffs for the first time. The cream puff pastry is intentionally soft, not crunchy (I'm referring to cheese lovers and the matcha cream puff). The filling is generously filled with creamy cream (not overly sweet), which contrasts with the outer coating. The cream puffs all have the same filling, except the chocolate ones (which have chocolate cream inside). The cheese cream wasn't very sweet (as stated on the label), the matcha one a little more (I liked the contrast with the cream inside). The cream puffs are quite expensive ($4 each); if you buy two, they cost $7. The sales assistant was very kind: she gave me the matcha cream puff without the white chocolate chips on top, as I had requested. Recommended if you're craving something creamy and satisfying.
